Did you know that there are two types of buttermilk?
The liquid left over from making butter is known as the traditional buttermilk. Traditional buttermilk is very low in fat (because most of the fat goes to make the butter). It can be consumed as a drink (with fresh ground pepper) or added to recipes of water for food productivity.
Cultured buttermilk is typically what is required for in recipes. It is also the type of buttermilk, find in the store or you can create your own using Starter cultured buttermilk. Cultured buttermilk is very similar toyogurt in the sense that is cultivated, with the help of live bacteria. Cultured buttermilk can be consumed as thick cream and drink or used in cooking (pancakes anyone?).
